Question
What are the Roles in MS Teams and what permissions are allowed?
Answer
Teams Roles
- Teams Administrators
- Can create new Teams (Currently, ITS System Services)
- Teams Owners
- Add/remove members to the Team
- Create Channels
- Set Channels to be Public, Private, or Shared (cannot be changed after-the-fact)
- Assign Owners to Private & Shared Channels, by assigning the Owner role for a channel the user is considered a Channel Owner, Team Members can be a Channel Owner
- Set Channel as Announcement-Only: Allows Owners to post announcement messages
- Add/remove members to Channels
- Delete messages in Channels
- Post in Announcement-only Channels
- Can add/remove Tabs (ex., SharePoint, OneNote) to Channels
- Invite to Shared Channels
- Approve new membership requests from Shared Links (Found under ellipsis next to Team or Channel name)
- Teams Members
- Post messages
- Join/leave Public Channels
Channel Types
- General: Default public Channel, cannot be removed or renamed. All Team members are added automatically
- Public: Governed by the Team Owner, available to everyone in the Team, cannot invite anyone outside of Team to Public Channel
- Private: Governed by the Channel Owner, available to anyone invited within the Team
- Shared: Governed by the Channel Owner, available to anyone invited regardless of Team membership
