Brightspace Pulse User Guide

 Brightspace Pulse is a mobile app for students with an Android or iOS mobile device. The app allows students to access and view details on upcoming course events, announcements, grades, and upcoming workload across all courses. Students can also access readings, and add their own events within the app. 

Users will require iOS 13.0+, or Android 6.0+ to use the Brightspace Pulse. Students can download the app from Apple's App Store and from Google Play.

Please note: SMS will no longer be supported as of July 2024.                                       


Getting Started with the Brightspace Pulse App

Step 1:  Download the Brightspace PULSE App to your mobile device.

   

Step 2: Open the App and tap “Pick your school” to get started.

Step 3: Type "Central Piedmont Community College" and select "brightspace.cpcc.edu." 

Step 4: Type in your CPCC username and password. Click "Login."

 

Navigating the Brightspace Pulse App

"Upcoming" Tab

 The "Upcoming" tab displays upcoming work (activities) for all of your courses. You can filter the list of activities by tapping the "Work To Do," "Events," or "All" sub-tabs.          

"Courses" Tab

 The "Courses" tab displays the courses you are currently enrolled in. You have to scroll through the page to navigate the course list. Also, all of your active courses from the current semester should show up at the top of the list.        

"Notifications" Tab

 The "Notifications" tab displays notifications about course-related news, updates, and grades from Announcements, Activity Feed, Grades, and Content in the Brightspace learning environment.

Viewing Your Grades

To view your grades:

  • Tap the "Courses" tab.

  • Tap a course to open the course.

  • Tap the "Grades" tab. All received grades for the course are displayed, indicating if feedback is available.

  • To view feedback, tap a grade. The grade and text feedback display.

  • To view details about the associated activity in Brightspace, tap "View Activity."       

Note: To open the "Grades" tool in a web browser and thus view full grade breakdowns and calculations, tap "View Grades in Browser."

Notifications

Under "Notifications," you should see two sub-tabs: "Updates" and "Subscriptions."

Updates

Under the "Updates" sub-tab, you will receive notifications for the following items:

  • Created or updated course content - You can view new and updated content associated with a notification, viewing the content directly in Brightspace Pulse. This also applies to content where a due date has been associated with the item.

    • To view the content, tap on the update. If there is no file URL available, tap "Open in the browser," which opens the content in Brightspace.

  • Created or updated Course Overview documents - When an instructor adds or updates the Course Overview document in Brightspace, you receive notifications in both Brightspace Pulse and in the browser-based Brightspace learning environment.

    • In Brightspace, you can optionally choose to receive instant notifications via email or text message when the Course Overview document is updated.

  • Course announcements - When an instructor wants to communicate changes to course updates, information, and reminders via course announcements, you receive a course announcement in Brightspace Pulse.
  • Activity Feed - When an instructor uses Activity Feed to post reminders about upcoming assignments and links to course materials, you receive notifications about those posts. Tapping an Activity Feed notification displays the associated post or comment in the Activity Feed.
  • New grades - When an instructor enters grades in a grade book, you receive grade notifications in Brightspace Pulse. View grades in Brightspace Pulse by tapping the update and then swiping left to reveal the grade.
  • Upcoming quizzes and assignments - You receive notifications about upcoming quizzes and assignments under the following conditions:
    • If the assignment or quiz has a due date, you are notified two days before the due date.
    • If the assignment or quiz has no due date, but has an end date, you are notified two days before the end date.
Note: By default, notifications display two days before each activity's due date or end date. However, your administrator can change the default value to specific hours or days.

Subscriptions

The Subscriptions sub-tab displays all replies to discussions you are subscribed to in discussion threads.

Note: To receive subscription notifications in Brightspace Pulse, you must subscribe to discussions from the Discussions tool in Brightspace.

How to receive notifications

Push Notifications

 Users are able to choose which push notifications they receive.  

  • Navigate to Settings -> Push Notifications. 

  • For each Tool item, toggle notifications to either On (green) or Off (gray).  

    • You can also toggle notifications for specific courses.

Email Notifications

 Users can choose which Email notification they would like to receive.  

  • Navigate to Settings -> Email Notifications

  • Under Instant Notifications, tap to select any Email notifications you wish to receive.

Having Trouble with the App?

Step 1: Update the Pulse app to the latest version
Step 2: Log out and log back in to the Pulse app
  • The Pulse app will prompt users to log out to apply the latest security updates and gain access to the ability to view external links in your native browser.

Users can choose one of the following methods to log out:

  • Use the in-app prompt to log out
  • From the prompt, users can tap Log out now and then log back in to apply updates.


This is the bullhorn icon used for warnings.

Important: For security purposes, users have 30 days from when they are notified by the prompt to log out of the Pulse app. After 30 days, users will be automatically logged out of all Pulse accounts, and they will need to manually log in to Pulse again to continue using Pulse.

  • Remove account from Pulse app
  • Users can also tap and hold their account name in Pulse to select Remove Account. Then they can tap Add Account to find their institution and log in again with their credentials. This also applies the required security updates.
