Faculty and Staff Laptops use the below power management settings (The idle times listed are total idle time, not idle time since the previous step):
While plugged into a power source (regular power cord or docking station):
- After 20 minutes of being idle, the display will turn off.
- After 30 minutes of being idle, the computer will enter sleep mode.
- While plugged into power, the laptop will not enter hibernate mode, and the network connection will remain active.
While running off of battery power:
- After 10 minutes of being idle, the display will turn off.
- After 15 minutes of being idle, the computer will enter sleep mode.
- After 30 minutes of being idle, the computer will enter hibernate mode.
The main difference between sleep mode and hibernate mode is the extent of how much the device's hardware is in a low power mode. While hibernate mode uses far less battery power compared to sleep mode, it does require some extra time for the computer to resume normal function when waking up from hibernate.
