How to Identify a Spoofed Text Message

What is a Spoofed Text?

A spoofed text message is a fraudulent message that appears to come from a legitimate source, such as a company executive, financial institution, or trusted individual. This can also be referred to as Smishing (SMS based phishing). Cybercriminals use spoofing techniques to disguise their identity, making the message seem trustworthy and convincing. These messages often aim to deceive recipients into sharing personal information, clicking on harmful links, or performing other actions that can compromise security.

How to Identify a Spoofed Text

1. Check the Sender’s Information.

Spoofed texts use a name or number similar to a trusted source. Verify the sender's details through official channels.

Look for slight variations or inconsistencies in the sender's phone number or email address.

2. Examine the Message Content

Be wary of urgent or threatening language. Spoofed texts often create a sense of urgency to prompt immediate action.

Look for grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, or unusual phrasing, which can be indicators of a fraudulent message.

3. Avoid Clicking on Links

Hover over any links to see the actual URL before clicking. Spoofed texts may contain malicious links designed to steal your information or infect your device.

Official communications will usually direct you to verified websites. If in doubt, navigate to the website manually instead of clicking on the link.

4. Do Not Share Personal Information

Legitimate organizations will not ask for sensitive information, such as passwords or financial details, via text message.

If a message requests personal information, verify its legitimacy through a trusted contact or official communication channel.

What to Do If You Receive a Spoofed Text

1. Do Not Respond

Avoid replying to suspicious messages. Responding can confirm your number as active, leading to more fraudulent attempts.

2. Report the Message

Forward the message to the Service Desk for further investigation by submitting a ticket through the ITS Client Portal.

3. Delete the Message

After reporting, delete the message from your device to prevent accidental interaction.

4. Ensure your device has updated software and enable security features provided by your messaging service.
