Microsoft Token Enrollment

Audience

Central Piedmont students and employees.

Task

This article provides steps on how to enroll a token for Microsoft multifactor authentication (MFA).

Prerequisites

User must have a Central Piedmont account and no other available method of MFA enrollment.

Instructions

  1. Visit the ITS Service Desk to receive a hardware token. Location and hours can be found on the Client Portal.

  2. Once you have the token, navigate to Microsoft My Account (myaccount.microsoft.com).

  3. Enter your Central Piedmont email address. Be sure to use the correct email format:

    • Students: username@email.cpcc.edu

    • Faculty & Staff: firstname.lastname@cpcc.edu

  1. Enter your password.  You may be prompted to authenticate with your current MFA method.  If you encounter an error in this step and are unable to proceed to the next step, please notify a Service Desk staff.

  2. On the My Account dashboard, choose Security info on the left navigation bar or UPDATE INFO within the Security info tile.

  1. Select + Add sign-in method then Hardware token.  Please note: you may not see all of the listed methods.

  1. Enter the 12-digit serial number on the back of the token.

  2. Enter token serial number

    Name your token so you can identify it in your list of sign-in methods and click Next. You may write any name you prefer.

  3. Name your token

    Tap on the power button on the token and a 6-digit number will appear on its screen.  Enter the number to verify. 

  4. You should see a confirmation message stating that your hardware token has been added.  Click Done and you will see the hardware token listed under the sign-in methods.

IMPORTANT - Please an additional method in case your token is unavailable.

  • Email can be used for account recovery (if you forget your password or get locked out), but it cannot be used as a multi-factor authentication (MFA) method when signing in. Be sure to set up at least one additional method to ensure you can access your account.

Outcome

You will be able to use a token for Microsoft MFA authentication.
